A collection of 300 films capturing the final days of the British Empire in India and other parts of south Asia was released by the University of Cambridge on Thursday.

The film archive comprises around 80 hours of footage provided by approximately 50 individual collections of people who lived or worked in Asia between 1911 and 1956 as British rule was coming to an end.

The silent films celebrate unique moments in history, from the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947 to life after the Quetta earthquake of 1935.

The archive primarily contains scenes shot during the partition, such as moving images of labourers working on railways, and pictures of the funeral of Lord Brabourne, a former governor of Bombay and Bengal, in 1939.

BALTIMORE – The leader of a household described as a religious cult was convicted of second-degree murder Tuesday along with two of her followers for starving a 1-year-old boy to death because he did not say "Amen" during a mealtime prayer.

Jurors also convicted Queen Antoinette, her daughter Trevia Williams and Marcus A. Cobbs of child abuse resulting in death. Cobbs was also found guilty of accessory after the fact for helping to cover up the death of Javon Thompson.

The defendants each face up to 60 years in prison when they are sentenced May 18.

They showed no emotion as the verdict was read, a contrast to their laughter and astonishment during prosecutors' closing arguments. The trial lasted six days, and jurors deliberated for about three hours.

JOHANNESBURG – With 100 days to go before the World Cup, jackhammers shuddered and bulldozers rumbled Tuesday as workers wearing "Proud to be building Soccer City for 2010" buttons readied South Africa's main stadium.

Inside, the grass was smooth and inviting. But not far away stacks of pavement tiles waited to be laid, and parking lots and access roads were still to be tarred.

The site could well be a metaphor for the June 11-July 11 tournament: While most of the big pieces are in place, all the details haven't been worked out.

As part of its preparations to the Commonwealth Games, the India national  rugby 7s team will take part  in the 34th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s in Suva this weekend .

The side has been pooled alongside Nawaka 7s champions Ratu Filise, Harbour Sharks, Lomavata Tamavua and Senidrala Waidina in Pool 8 at this weekend's Marist 7s.

The team flew out to Fiji last night to acquire more in-depth knowledge about the game and identify their strength and weakness ahead of the Games.

During their three-week trip, the 23-member contingent will meet the former champions and legends of the game, visit the state-of-the-art gymnasium, world class pitches and fitness professionals and compete in few practice matches against respective national teams.

Manny Pacquiao ran roughshod through four different sparring partners earlier this week, and boxing's pound-for-pound king plans to churn through just as many on Saturday.

He's been peppering the speed bag, pounding the heavy bag and doing enough running to make Usain Bolt fall over in a heap. Under the watchful eye of trainer Freddie Roach, Pacquiao is putting himself in position to knock out Joshua Clottey when they fight March 13 in Dallas.

"Manny is getting better all the time," Roach marveled after a training session Friday at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles. "I know Clottey is a big, strong guy. I respect him, he's a great fighter. But Manny I feel is going to overwhelm him with his speed and combinations, and I do believe we will be the first one to stop him in 12 rounds."
